The Hot Water Heater Breakdown - Which is best for you?

Not all hot water heaters are created equal. There are two main categories of water heaters for the Brentwood, TN area. Each has its benefits and drawbacks.
  • Conventional Storage Tank Water Heater
  • Tankless Water Heater
Lets go over the differences between each one. This will give you a better idea of the functionality of each unit and help you make a more informed decision.

Conventional Storage Tank Water Heater
The old faithful, traditional tank system. As the name suggests, a conventional storage tank water heater will store water in a tank, which is available in different storing capacities per gallon. These types of water heaters have a large amount of hot water ‘on tap’, and is utilized when a distribution faucet is turned on. How is the temperature of your water controlled? Either electric, gas, or propane is used to bring the water to a precise temperature. This is the most common form of hot water usage for residential buildings. The life span is around a decade or more, based on proper maintenance and usage. Newer tanks are available that have optimized energy efficiency saving you money on your monthly water bill.

Conventional Storage Tank Water Heater Advantages

  • In the short term, this is the most cost effective solution for your hot water supply
  • The cost of the tank itself is generally much less expensive than other options in the market
  • The set up cost is less expensive requiring fewer plumbing lines needed for the installation
  • If you have a gas type heater you are protected from any electrical outages preventing you from generating hot water

Conventional Storage Tank Water Heater Disadvantages

  • Not energy efficient - these water heaters do require more energy to operate costing you extra on your energy bill
  • A water storage tank has the risk of running out of usable hot water, requiring energy and time to refill the tank and bring the water to a warm temperature
  • Generally the tank is large in size requiring excess space which otherwise could be free for other purposes
  • The water becomes stagnant at it sits in the tank making is susceptible to rust
  • If the water tank starts to leak it can cause excess damage to your house and foundation if untreated
Maintenance
Most homeowners install a hot water tank and forget to maintain it throughout it lifetime. This will drastically decrease the longevity and performance of your unit. Once a year you need to drain your hot water tank in order for it to be cleaned and inspected. This required a professional to prevent any damage during the maintenance process. Give us a call, to schedule an appointment. We specialize in services all types of traditional hot water heaters.

Tankless Water Heater

These are becoming more popular with new home renovations and energy efficient homeowners. There is no tank installation required to hold a large amount of water therefore no excess energy is being used to hold a constant water temperature. It is a much a more energy efficient unit as it uses heating coils to heat water on demand. It also hangs on the wall freeing up usable space. Not to mention a more aesthetically pleasing sight as apposed to a large tank of water. One of the best qualities of in our opinion of a tankless water heater is its reliability in providing hot water. You don’t have to worry about it running out of heated water as you normally would with a conventional water heater. As far as the life span of your tankless water heater, it will be effective for around two decades, outperforming the life span of a conventional water heater by 10 years.

Tankless Water Heater Advantages
  • Can outlast a traditional tank water heater by 10 years on average
  • There is no energy consumption to heat a water storage tank, providing much better energy efficiency
  • Tankless heaters require less space, typically being installed on walls
  • There is no shortage of hot water
Tankless Water Heater Disadvantages

  • The initial installation costs associated with a tankless water heat are typically greater than a conventional storage tank water heater due.
  • The tankless unit itself is generally more expensive than a storage tank.
Maintenance
Periodic maintenance is highly recommended to increase the life span of your water heater unit. Be sure to give us a call for any questions regarding repairs or maintenance on your unit. We have experts in the field everyday throughout the Brentwood, TN area who specialize in tankless water heaters.

Electric Heat Pump Water Heater
These water heaters are powered by electricity pulling heat from the air and then moving the heat to a water storage tank. They are considerably more energy efficient than a conventional water heater using up to 60% less energy consumption. Heat pump water heaters are more popular in warmer climates where they can have access to warm air year round.
